FAQ:

Q:  What are the differences between environmentally friendly paint and regular paint?

A:  There are several differences between and advantages to using environmentally friendly paint over regular paint. The first and most noticeable is the smell. While eco-paint may have a slight earthy smell (depending on brand), the smell doesn’t linger and typically dissipates within a couple days. Regular paint has a comparably strong smell, lasting two weeks or longer. Another advantage is the number of finishes and types of paint available over regular paint. Eco-friendly paints are available in clay-based formulas, milk protein formulas, mineral formulas, and even VOC-blocking formulas that seal the current VOCs from contaminating the air. Most of these eco-paints are available in the standard finishes (satin, eggshell, flat, semi gloss, and high gloss), along with additional finishes specific to the brand. The biggest difference and advantage past the smell is that eco-friendly paints have low to no VOC content. VOCs are the harmful and carcinogenic chemicals typically found in regular paint that contribute to poor indoor air quality. These chemicals are what give regular paint a lingering and strong odor. These chemicals also leech out over time, contamination your home’s air in a process called off-gassing.

Q: Is there a cost difference between environmentally friendly painting and regular painting?

A: Yes. Since the paints we use are not available in our state, they average a little more. However, cost is more dependant on the quality of the company being hired. At Tennessee Green Painters, we focus on detail-oriented painting and finishing. Our quality is a culmination of perfectionism, old world work ethic, and state of the art technology.

Q: Is there a difference in quality and durability in environmentally friendly paint?

A:  There is no difference in the quality and durability of eco-paints and most eco-finishes compared to premium regular paint. For instance, eco-clear coats are just as strong and abrasion-resistant on flooring as the typical clear coats. The bad reputation comes from poor applications and putting certain finishes in areas the finish is not suited for. It is the responsibility of the painter to know their products and to achieve and exceed the results expected by the customer.

Q:  Do I need the hypo-allergenic option?

A:  We recommend this option if there is a newborn in close proximity to the work, or if someone in the home has severe asthma, a high chemical sensitivity, severe allergies, or if you simply want the entire process contained.

Q:  Am I going to have untrustworthy people in my home?

A:  Absolutely not. We are a small company that doesn’t subcontract to other companies - all work in your home is done by us. Any employee of Tennessee Green Painters is trusted by the owner to work in his own home without supervision.

Q:  I am pregnant or plan to be soon. What painting considerations do I need to be aware of?

A:  Congratulations! There is a lot to do when expecting. One task that seems to end up happening later during this time is getting around to painting your baby’s room. While this is very common and just one task among the hundreds, it shouldn’t be over-looked. All paint takes time to cure (dry completely). While zero VOC paints don’t off-gas toxic chemicals like regular paints do, there are still special considerations to take into account. If the babies room is being painted within a month of the expected delivery, please contact us as we have options that are specifically geared for these times.

Q:  I gave birth recently and the baby’s room still needs to be painted. What do I do?

A:  If the babies room hasn’t been painted and the baby has already arrived, there are still a few options left. Please give us a call to discuss them. Never paint a newborn babies room with regular paint - we use specific paints for this and have specialized tools and custom made equipment that allows us to do this safely.

Q:  I have young children. Is there anything I should be aware of when I have the house painted?

A:  Young children (2+ years) can wreak havoc on paint. While certain finishes are best kept in the parents’ room and “off limits” areas, we have products and application techniques that are tough enough for children.

Q:  I don’t live in Tennessee, but I want to hire you. Is that a possibility?

A:  Yes. Every so often, we travel to another state. With that said, depending on your state and county there is additional paperwork that must be done. We are willing and able to do this for our customers. Please contact us for more details.

Q:  I’m working with an interior designer. Will you work with them, too?

A:  We enjoy working with designers. Their style is what you’re looking for and we will fulfill that vision for your home. With that said, we work solely for you. This is important, as painting is a very hands on experience and we require communication directly with you, without an intermediary, to ultimately achieve what you’re looking for.
