Nov 9, 2016 · My 2001 Subaru Forester (155k) began to have a problem wherein it started overheating after clocking around 1500 miles on a road trip from LA to Seattle. 30 mins of driving, looses 30-50 milliliters of coolant. I have lost coolant almost down to the Low mark, about 2 - 3 inches down from Full. Subaru cautions against mixing it with other coolants, so a small amount of distilled water is OK for topping off, IMHO. That sludge will get harder and harder to get out over time. This picture shows my current level at 26,700. Still lukewarm heat. The other question I have is, they put the GREEN coolant in, but I am not sure what brand it is, I have a 50/50 premix green coolant that is suitable for the forester but want to know is it safe I top up using this? as I dont know what the mechanic used. Replaced thermostat and new coolant. Enough to drop down the neck of the radiator fill port. Got a coolant system check and found out that the fluctuation in coolant levels had allowed the engine to get too hot on too many occasions, and had actually warped the aluminum heads. I had to get the car jumpstarted when I came back. Is the subaru brand of coolant already diluted so I can truly just add the coolant to the appropriate mark on the reservoir? Or do I need to prepare a mix of water/coolant and add that to the reservoir. The car has never heated on me and has 116k.
